Harpephyllum

Harpephyllum is a genus of flowering plants in the family Anacardiaceae, native to southern Africa. The genus currently contains only one recognized species, Harpephyllum caffrum, commonly known as the wild plum or kaffir plum. This species is a medium to large evergreen tree, often found in coastal bush, forest margins, and along rivers.

Harpephyllum caffrum is characterized by its pinnately compound leaves, which are leathery and glossy. The leaflets are typically arranged alternately along the leaf stalk. The flowers are small and borne in panicles, appearing from late winter to early spring. They are usually greenish-white or pale yellow and are often dioecious, meaning individual trees have either male or female flowers.

The fruit of Harpephyllum caffrum is a drupe, oval in shape and reddish-brown when ripe. These fruits are edible and have a tart, plum-like flavor. They are a food source for various birds and mammals. The tree has a spreading habit and is often used for ornamental purposes due to its attractive foliage and fruit. It is also valued for its timber, which is dense and durable, though not widely used commercially. Harpephyllum is well-adapted to a range of soil types but prefers well-drained conditions and can tolerate moderate frost once established.
