Hardtop

A hardtop is a type of automobile roof made from a rigid material such as metal, fiberglass, or composite. It is used to cover the passenger compartment in contrast to a soft top, which is fabric or vinyl. The term can also describe removable rigid roofs used on some convertibles or two‑door models, which can be detached or stored when not needed.

Historically, hardtops emerged in the 1950s and 1960s as pillarless designs that lacked a B‑pillar between the front and rear side windows, creating a frameless look. Marketing often referred to these as hardtop coupes or hardtop sedans. The style aimed to combine the sporty, open appearance of a convertible with the practicality and weather protection of a fixed roof.

In modern vehicle design the hardtop label is less about a unique roof structure and more about distinguishing fixed-roof cars from fabric-top convertibles. Removable hardtops remain available on some models, particularly sport coupes and SUVs, though most mainstream cars use fixed metal roofs or glass roofs. The term is sometimes used for trim packages or nostalgia marketing.
