Hardband

Hardband refers to a type of protective coating applied to drill pipe used in oil and gas drilling operations. It is a welded layer of hard, wear-resistant material, typically a composite of hardfacing alloys, applied to the outside of the pipe, specifically around the tool joint box and pin ends. The primary purpose of hardbanding is to prevent excessive wear and abrasion of the drill pipe and the walls of the borehole.

During drilling, the drill string rotates and scrapes against the rock formations and casing, leading to significant wear. Hardbanding acts as a sacrificial layer, absorbing this abrasive action and protecting the underlying pipe material.
