Happeutusta

Happeutusta is the chemical process by which a substance increases its oxidation state, most often through a reaction with oxygen. In everyday language it is closely linked with oxygenation, but oxidation encompasses broader redox reactions where electrons are removed or oxidation states rise, not only by oxygen transfer.

Mechanisms of happeutusta include direct incorporation of oxygen into a molecule (oxidation) and indirect pathways via oxidizing agents such as hydrogen peroxide, permanganate, or chlorine, as well as catalytic or electrochemical routes. In inorganic chemistry, many metals rust or corrode when exposed to air or water, forming oxides and hydroxides as a result of happeutusta.
