Happelisust, or acidity, is a chemical property that describes the tendency of a substance to donate protons (hydrogen ions) in solution. In practical terms, it is closely related to the concentration of hydrogen ions and is often quantified using the pH scale, where lower pH indicates higher acidity, higher pH indicates basicity, and pH around 7 is neutral. The concept also includes acid strength, often described by pKa, and the amount of acid available to react, which is measured in methods such as total titratable acidity (TTA).

Common measurement methods include using a calibrated pH meter to assess hydrogen ion activity, or performing titration to determine how much base is needed to neutralize the acids in a solution. In food and beverage contexts, TTA is frequently used to represent overall acidity, which can influence flavor, texture, and shelf life. In chemistry, acidity is analyzed alongside concepts like buffer capacity and acid-base equilibria, and it is distinguished from sour taste, which is a sensory consequence of the presence of certain acids.
