Hapettamattomia

Hapettamattomia is a Finnish term used to describe substances and materials that exhibit high resistance to oxidation under specified conditions. It is commonly employed in Finnish chemistry, materials science, and corrosion literature to refer to oxidation-resistant materials or coatings, though it is not a formal term in international nomenclature.

True non-oxidizability under all conditions is rare; most materials can oxidize given enough time, temperature, and a reactive atmosphere. Materials described as hapettamattomia typically achieve their resistance through mechanisms such as passivation, where a stable, protective oxide or other film forms on the surface, or by possessing chemical bonds and structures that intrinsically resist oxidation.

Examples frequently cited include noble metals like gold and platinum, which are resistant to oxidation in many environments, as well as certain ceramic materials and protective coatings that form durable oxide layers, such as chromium oxide or aluminum oxide. The term can also apply to engineered surfaces designed to minimize oxidation.

Assessment of oxidation resistance is usually conducted by oxidation or corrosion testing at elevated temperatures, often using thermogravimetric analysis or weight-change measurements, and by electrochemical methods in corrosive media. The suitability of a material as hapettamattomia depends on temperature, atmosphere, purity, and exposure time; outside those conditions, oxidation can proceed.
