It involves altering the harmonic content and other acoustic properties of a sound to achieve a desired sonic character. This can be accomplished through various means, including playing techniques, the use of specific instruments, or electronic signal processing.

In acoustic instruments, hangszínformálás is often achieved through nuanced control of how the instrument is played. For a string instrument, this might involve altering bowing speed, pressure, or the point of contact on the string. For a wind instrument, it could involve changes in embouchure, breath support, or the use of different fingerings.
