Hangnyomásszinten, which translates to "sound pressure level" in English, is a physical quantity that expresses the magnitude of sound waves. It is defined as the ratio of the sound pressure to a reference sound pressure. Sound pressure is the deviation from atmospheric pressure caused by a sound wave, and it is measured in pascals (Pa). The reference sound pressure is typically set at the hearing threshold of the human ear, which is 20 micropascals (µPa).

The unit of sound pressure level is the decibel (dB). This logarithmic scale is used because the range of sound pressures that humans can perceive is very large. A sound pressure level of 0 dB does not mean the absence of sound, but rather a sound pressure equal to the reference pressure. As sound pressure increases, the sound pressure level in decibels also increases. For example, a sound pressure level of 20 dB corresponds to a sound pressure ten times greater than the reference pressure, while 40 dB corresponds to a sound pressure 100 times greater.
