Handclasping

Handclasping refers to the way individuals interlock their fingers when holding hands. While there is no universally correct or incorrect way to clasp hands, research has identified two primary patterns. The first pattern, often termed the dominant handclasp, occurs when the thumb of the dominant hand rests on top of the fingers of the non-dominant hand. The second pattern, the non-dominant handclasp, is the inverse, with the thumb of the non-dominant hand on top. Studies suggest that people tend to consistently favor one pattern over the other.

The reasons behind a preferred handclasping pattern are not fully understood, but some theories propose it might be linked to subtle aspects of handedness, motor control, or even learned behavior. While some popular psychology sources have attempted to ascribe personality traits to different handclasping styles, these claims lack scientific validation. The act of handclasping itself is a common form of physical affection and connection across many cultures, serving to express intimacy, solidarity, or support. The specific way fingers interlock is a minor variation in this broader social gesture.
