In the gaseous state, particles are far apart and move randomly at high speeds. They collide with each other and the walls of their container. Gases have no definite shape or volume and will expand to fill any container they occupy. Examples include air, steam, and helium.

Beyond these common states, other states of matter exist, such as plasma, which is an ionized gas, and Bose-Einstein condensates, which occur at extremely low temperatures. The transition between these states, known as phase transitions, occurs when conditions such as temperature or pressure change, affecting the energy and interactions of the particles.
