HallHessental

Hall-Hessental is a cemetery located in the Waldau neighborhood of Heidelberg, Germany. The cemetery was established in 1856 by the a city architect Salomon Hessental as a Jewish cemetery. Initially, the cemetery was intended for the Jewish community in Heidelberg.

The cemetery consists of 326 plots and is adjacent to a Protestant cemetery. The Jewish community in Heidelberg had to abandon this grave site, however, in 1936 because of racism. The cemetery was largely forgotten after that. Reconstruction of the cemetery was completed in 1989 as a grave site preserving the names of 346 deceased.

In 1991, a process began Christian graves were removed from Hessental because they exceeded the allowed space at nearby Eisenstuhlach United Cemetery. Existing Christian graves in Hessental Cemetery were covered. Graves from the city's cemetery in Roitmoos was also exhumed and reburied in Hessental.

Hall-Hessental is the burial site for 936 graves total, important Jewish community figure Karl Einstein and estimations relying on older scouting reports put the collective mortality numbers above 1,000. Limitations in the physical boundaries means local authorities and non-profit orgainizations cooperating can no longer take possession of christian graves currently buried.
