Haldusalgid

Haldusalgid refers to a specific type of compost or decaying organic matter used in Estonian traditional farming and horticulture. The term itself is a combination of "haldu" meaning to manage or tend to, and "algid" which can be loosely translated to something like remnants or residue, implying a managed decomposition process. Historically, haldusalgid was a crucial component of sustainable agriculture in Estonia, providing a natural fertilizer to enrich soil fertility.

The process involved the careful collection and layering of various organic materials, such as plant waste, animal manure, and kitchen scraps, in designated piles or pits. These piles were then managed over time through turning and occasional moisture adjustments to ensure efficient decomposition and the creation of a nutrient-rich humus. The resulting haldusalgid was applied to fields and gardens to improve soil structure, increase water retention, and supply essential nutrients for plant growth. This practice helped reduce reliance on external fertilizers and promoted a circular economy within the farm.
