Halakhaan

Halakhaan is a fictional city-state in the fantasy world of Eryndor. Located along the western coast by the Sapphire Sea, it straddles a natural harbor and a shallow river delta, with hills rising inland. The city functions as a major trading hub and administrative center for the region.

In the in-world language, Halakhaan is said to derive from Halakharan roots meaning "harbor of songs" or "place of echoes," a reference to the city's maritime culture and public performances that accompany markets.

According to legend, Halakhaan formed when rival merchant fleets brokered a fragile alliance after surviving a catastrophic storm. Over centuries it grew through trade, craft guilds, and naval defense, maintaining autonomy from neighboring states through treaties and a tradition of negotiated settlements rather than conquest.

Halakhaan is governed by a Council of Merchants and Artisans, with a magistrate elected from the council to oversee day-to-day affairs. The economy centers on port trade, shipbuilding, textile production, and metalwork, with markets that attract travelers from distant regions.

Cultural life emphasizes music, poetry, and public performances. The annual Songfall Festival marks the tidal equinox and includes street theater, instrument workshops, and prize competitions. Notable landmarks include the Granite Citadel, the Crescent Docks, and the Nehar Market, which sits at the heart of the old quarter.
