Hajukapasiteetti

Hajukapasiteetti refers to the ability of a substance to produce a noticeable odor. It is a complex property influenced by several factors, including the chemical structure of the substance, its concentration in the air, and the sensitivity of the olfactory system of an individual.

Substances with a highhajukapasiteetti readily release volatile molecules into the air. These molecules then interact with olfactory receptors in the nose, triggering a perceived smell. The strength and type of the odor are determined by the specific chemical compounds and their concentration. Even at very low concentrations, some substances can be detected by the human nose due to their potent odors. This is why certain perfumes or strong-smelling chemicals can be detected from a distance.

Conversely, substances with lowhajukapasiteetti either do not readily release volatile compounds or the compounds they release are not easily detected by our sense of smell. This does not necessarily mean the substance is odorless, but rather that its odor is faint or requires a higher concentration to be perceived.
