Haihduttamoja, Finnish for evaporators, are industrial devices used to remove a solvent, typically water, from a solution through evaporation. The primary purpose of an evaporator is to concentrate a solution by increasing the solute concentration. They are commonly employed in various industries, including food and beverage processing, chemical manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and wastewater treatment.

The fundamental principle behind an evaporator's operation is the application of heat to a liquid, causing the solvent to vaporize. The vapor is then separated from the remaining liquid, which becomes more concentrated. Various types of evaporators exist, differing in their design and method of heat transfer. Common types include falling film evaporators, forced circulation evaporators, and multiple-effect evaporators. Multiple-effect evaporators are particularly energy-efficient as they utilize the vapor generated in one stage to heat the subsequent stage.

The selection of an evaporator depends on factors such as the properties of the solution being processed (viscosity, heat sensitivity, tendency to foul), the desired concentration, and energy efficiency requirements. Evaporators play a crucial role in reducing the volume of liquids, facilitating further processing, or preparing products for storage and transportation. In some applications, the concentrated product is the desired outcome, while in others, the evaporated solvent might be recovered for reuse.
