Hagnaðarmörk, often translated as profit margin, is a key financial metric used to assess a company's profitability. It represents the percentage of revenue that remains as profit after all expenses have been deducted. There are several types of profit margins, including gross profit margin, operating profit margin, and net profit margin, each offering a different perspective on a company's financial health.

The gross profit margin is calculated by subtracting the cost of goods sold (COGS) from revenue and then dividing the result by revenue. This margin indicates how efficiently a company is managing its direct production costs.

The operating profit margin, on the other hand, takes into account operating expenses in addition to COGS. It is calculated by dividing operating income by revenue. This metric reflects the profitability of a company's core business operations before considering interest and taxes.

The net profit margin is the broadest measure of profitability. It is calculated by dividing net income (the bottom line) by revenue. This margin shows the percentage of each sales dollar that translates into actual profit for the company after all expenses, including taxes and interest, have been paid.

Analyzing these different profit margins over time and comparing them to industry benchmarks can provide valuable insights into a company's performance, pricing strategies, and cost management effectiveness. A rising profit margin generally indicates improved financial performance, while a declining margin may signal potential problems that require attention.
