HPVtestiä is the Finnish term for the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) test. This test is primarily used to screen for cervical cancer in women. HPV is a very common group of viruses, and certain high-risk types of HPV can cause abnormal cell changes in the cervix that can, over time, develop into cancer. The HPV test detects the presence of these high-risk HPV DNA strains.

The HPV test can be performed on its own as part of a cervical cancer screening program, or it can be conducted alongside a Pap smear (cytology test), which examines the cells themselves for abnormalities. If the HPV test is positive, it indicates the presence of a high-risk HPV infection, which may warrant further investigation, such as a colposcopy, to visually examine the cervix and potentially take a biopsy.

Regular HPV testing, typically recommended for women starting in their early thirties, is a crucial tool in the early detection and prevention of cervical cancer. Early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes. It's important for individuals to follow the screening guidelines provided by their healthcare provider or national health authorities. The test is generally safe and is usually performed during a routine gynecological examination.
