HNF6

HNF6, also known as Forkhead box protein S1 (FOXPS1), is a transcription factor belonging to the forkhead box (FOX) protein superfamily. These proteins are characterized by a conserved DNA-binding domain. HNF6 plays a crucial role in the development and function of various organs, most notably the liver, pancreas, and brain.

In the liver, HNF6 is essential for hepatocyte differentiation and the expression of numerous genes involved in metabolic processes, such as glucose and lipid metabolism. It also contributes to the development of bile ducts. In the pancreas, HNF6 is involved in the differentiation of endocrine and exocrine cells, influencing insulin production and secretion.

During embryonic development, HNF6 is expressed in the developing nervous system, where it is implicated in neuronal differentiation and migration. Its precise functions in the brain are still an active area of research. Aberrant HNF6 expression has been linked to various diseases, including liver cancer, diabetes, and certain developmental disorders.
