Common administrative tasks involve editing paths under SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows, such as Run entries under SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run to launch programs on startup, or configuring services under SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services.

HKLM is loaded into memory during system boot and is protected by access control lists. It remains a core component of the Windows registry, alongside other hives such as HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, HKEY_CURRENT_USER, HKEY_USERS, and HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG.
