They describe how a given path is expected to perform under current and predicted ionospheric conditions and are used for planning, forecasting, and budgeting of HF links. The values are important for amateur radio operators, maritime and aviation services, and military communications, where reliable long‑distance contact depends on ionospheric propagation.

A typical HFväyläarvo set includes several elements. The usable frequency range for the path at a given time is characterized by the maximum usable frequency (MUF) and the lowest usable frequency (LUF). Predictions also cover expected path distance and skip distance, anticipated path loss and received signal level, and the overall link reliability or availability. The data reflect the propagation mode, whether long‑range skywave via the ionosphere or shorter ground‑wave, and how these modes vary with time of day, season, and solar activity. Inputs for generating HFväyläarvoja include the time, geographic route, operating frequency, and solar and geomagnetic conditions (for example indices reflecting solar flux and geomagnetic activity).
