HF technology, or high-frequency technology, refers to methods, devices, and systems that operate in the high-frequency portion of the radio spectrum, typically 3 to 30 MHz. It encompasses RF engineering, signal processing, and antenna design used to transmit and receive information across considerable distances through ionospheric propagation, as well as for local and regional communications.

Historically, HF technology enabled long-distance communication before satellites, with applications in shortwave broadcasting, maritime and military communications, and the rise of amateur radio. The primary propagation mode in this band is skywave, where ionospheric reflection allows signals to reach beyond the horizon. Propagation is variable, depending on time of day, season, and solar activity, which affects link budgets and reliability.

Core technical elements include impedance matching, amplification, filtering, and modulation schemes suited to noisy HF channels. Antennas for 3–30 MHz include long wires, dipoles, and vertical structures; many systems use tuners or tunable impedances to cover multiple bands. Design emphasizes noise reduction, isolation between transmit and receive paths, and compliance with emission limits.

Applications span emergency communications, maritime and aviation services, government and defense, and the amateur radio community. HF technology also supports RF research, education, and civilian resilience in communications. The field evolves with digital modes and software-defined radio, while spectrum management under ITU rules and national regulators shapes usage, licensing, and interference mitigation.
