HEXBrelated

HEXBrelated is a term used to describe genetic variations or mutations within the HEXB gene. The HEXB gene provides instructions for making an enzyme called beta-hexosaminidase B. This enzyme is crucial for breaking down certain fatty substances, specifically gangliosides, within cells. When the HEXB gene is altered, the production or function of beta-hexosaminidase B can be impaired.

Deficiencies in beta-hexosaminidase B activity due to HEXBrelated genetic changes are associated with a group of rare inherited metabolic disorders known as Sandhoff disease and certain forms of Tay-Sachs disease. In these conditions, the undigested fatty substances accumulate in nerve cells and other tissues, leading to progressive neurological damage. Symptoms can vary in severity and age of onset, but often include developmental delay, motor skill loss, vision and hearing impairment, and seizures. The inheritance pattern for these disorders is autosomal recessive, meaning an individual must inherit two altered copies of the HEXB gene, one from each parent, to be affected. Research into HEXBrelated variations aims to understand the precise mechanisms of enzyme dysfunction and to explore potential therapeutic strategies for these rare diseases.
