Högmedeltiden, often translated as the High Middle Ages, refers to the period of European history that spans roughly from the 11th to the 13th century. This era is characterized by significant growth and transformation across various aspects of European society. Economically, it saw a notable increase in agricultural productivity, leading to population growth and the expansion of trade networks. New farming techniques, such as the heavy plow and crop rotation, contributed to this agricultural boom.

Urban centers began to flourish during this period. Cities grew in size and importance, becoming hubs for commerce, craft production, and intellectual life. The rise of guilds regulated trade and craftsmanship, contributing to the development of a more complex urban economy. Politically, the High Middle Ages witnessed the consolidation of royal power in many European kingdoms. Monarchs sought to centralize their authority, leading to the development of more sophisticated administrative and legal systems. This period also saw the formation of early parliaments and representative bodies in some regions.

Culturally and intellectually, this was a time of great innovation. The establishment of universities, such as those in Paris, Bologna, and Oxford, marked a significant development in higher education and scholarship. Scholasticism, a philosophical method that dominated medieval philosophy, flourished during this period. Architecturally, the Romanesque style, with its rounded arches and massive forms, gave way to the Gothic style, characterized by pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and flying buttresses, which allowed for the construction of taller and more elaborate cathedrals. The High Middle Ages laid much of the groundwork for the transformations that would characterize the subsequent Renaissance.
