Hõõrdjõud is the Estonian term for friction. It is a force that opposes the relative motion of surfaces in contact. Friction arises from the interactions between the molecules of the surfaces. There are several types of friction, including static friction, kinetic friction, rolling friction, and fluid friction.

Static friction is the force that prevents an object from moving when a force is applied. It acts in the opposite direction of the applied force and its magnitude can vary up to a maximum value. Once this maximum value is exceeded, the object begins to move.

Kinetic friction, also known as sliding friction, is the force that opposes the motion of an object that is already sliding across a surface. It is generally constant in magnitude, though it is typically less than the maximum static friction.

Rolling friction occurs when an object rolls over a surface. It is usually much smaller than sliding friction and is caused by the deformation of the rolling object and the surface.

Fluid friction, or drag, is the resistance experienced by an object moving through a fluid, such as air or water. This force depends on the object's shape, speed, and the properties of the fluid.

Understanding and managing friction is crucial in many applications, from engineering and transportation to everyday tasks. For example, lubricants are used to reduce friction, while tires are designed to maximize friction for better grip.
