Hälsingeland

Hälsingland is a historical province in northern Sweden, located on the coast of the Baltic Sea. It is bordered by Gästrikland to the south, Dalarna and Härjedalen to the west, and Medelpad to the north. Administratively, Hälsingland is now part of the modern county of Gävleborg.

The landscape of Hälsingland is characterized by its long coastline with numerous islands and skerries, as well as vast forests and fertile river valleys. The Ljusnan River is its most prominent waterway, flowing through the province and contributing to its agricultural significance. Historically, the region has been known for its timber industry, with logging and shipbuilding playing important roles.

The inhabitants of Hälsingland are known as Hälsingar. The province has a rich cultural heritage, particularly evident in its unique folk art, music, and traditions. The distinctive painted farmhouses, known as "Hälsingegårdar," are a UNESCO World Heritage site and showcase the region's historical prosperity and artistic expression. These farmhouses are often elaborately decorated with colorful murals and intricate woodwork.

The economy of Hälsingland today is diverse, with industries including forestry, manufacturing, and tourism. The province offers a variety of natural attractions, from its coastal areas to its inland forests and lakes, making it a destination for outdoor recreation. Major towns include Hudiksvall, Söderhamn, and Bollnäs.
