Háreytingar

Háreytingar refers to seismic waves that travel through the Earth's interior. These waves are generated by various sources, most commonly earthquakes, but also by volcanic eruptions, meteor impacts, and even large human-made explosions. Scientists study háreytingar to understand the Earth's internal structure, composition, and processes.

There are two main types of háreytingar: body waves and surface waves. Body waves travel through the Earth's interior. Primary waves, or P-waves, are compressional waves that travel fastest and can pass through solids, liquids, and gases. Secondary waves, or S-waves, are shear waves that travel slower than P-waves and can only pass through solids. Surface waves travel along the Earth's surface and are typically slower than body waves but can cause more damage during earthquakes. Love waves and Rayleigh waves are the two types of surface waves.

By analyzing the arrival times and characteristics of different seismic waves at various monitoring stations around the world, seismologists can infer the density, temperature, and physical state of these deep Earth regions.
