Gångposter

Gångposter refers to a traditional Swedish method of constructing wooden buildings, particularly farmhouses and outbuildings, where the walls are formed by interlocked logs. This technique is a hallmark of vernacular architecture in Sweden and other Nordic countries. The logs are typically squared or hewn and are notched at the corners to create a strong, interlocking structure without the need for metal fasteners. The notches, often dovetailed or saddle-shaped, allow the logs to fit snugly together, providing stability and a tight seal against the elements.

The construction process involves careful selection and preparation of timber, usually pine or spruce. Logs are often air-dried for an extended period to reduce shrinkage and warping before being shaped and notched. This method creates a building with excellent thermal insulation properties due to the mass of the timber and the tight fit of the logs. Over time, the timber can settle, and adjustments might be needed to maintain the structural integrity.
