Gyújtógyertyákat, commonly known as spark plugs, are essential components in internal combustion engines. Their primary function is to ignite the air-fuel mixture within the combustion chamber. This ignition is achieved by creating an electrical spark across a small gap between two electrodes. The high voltage current from the ignition system travels through the spark plug's insulator, down to the center electrode, and then jumps across the gap to the ground electrode, initiating combustion.

The design of a spark plug is crucial for efficient engine operation. It consists of a metal shell, an insulator, a center electrode, and a ground electrode. The insulator, typically made of ceramic, prevents the high voltage current from escaping to the engine block. The gap between the electrodes is precisely set to ensure a strong spark under various engine conditions.

Spark plugs wear out over time due to the intense heat, pressure, and chemical environment within the combustion chamber. Factors like the type of fuel, engine operating conditions, and quality of the spark plug can affect its lifespan. Worn or fouled spark plugs can lead to misfires, reduced engine power, increased fuel consumption, and poor emissions. Regular inspection and replacement of spark plugs are therefore important for maintaining engine performance and longevity. Different types of spark plugs exist, using various materials for the electrodes (such as copper, platinum, or iridium) to enhance durability and performance.
