Gyakutsuki

Gyakutsuki is a term originating from the Japanese martial art of Karate. It describes a specific type of punch or strike. Literally translated, "gyaku" means reverse or opposite, and "tsuki" means punch. Therefore, gyakutsuki translates to "reverse punch."

This technique is characterized by its execution with the rear hand, which is opposite to the leading leg. For example, if a practitioner is in a natural stance with their left leg forward, a right-hand punch would be a gyakutsuki. This contrasts with a "junzuki" or forward punch, which is typically delivered with the front hand.

The power generation in a gyakutsuki comes from the rotation of the hips and torso, transferring energy through the body to the fist. This allows for a more powerful strike compared to a punch from the lead hand, which might be faster but less forceful. It is a fundamental technique taught in many Karate styles and is crucial for offensive maneuvers, particularly at mid-range distances. Its effectiveness lies in its ability to deliver a strong, committed blow.
