Guánica

Guánica is a municipality located in the southwestern region of Puerto Rico. It is situated on the coast, south of the municipalities of Sabana Grande and Yauco, and west of the municipality of Peñuelas. Guánica is known for its dry forest, a unique ecosystem that is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The dry forest is home to a diverse array of plant and animal life, many of which are endemic to the region.

The area's history is tied to its natural resources. Guánica was historically a significant site for salt production due to its arid climate and coastal location. The Spanish colonial era saw the establishment of salt flats that continued to be exploited for centuries. The construction of the Guánica sugar mill in the early 20th century marked a period of significant economic activity, transforming the landscape and economy of the region. Although the sugar industry has since declined, the legacy of this era is still visible in the area.

The Guánica Dry Forest is a major attraction, offering opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, and exploring the unique flora and fauna adapted to arid conditions. The coastline also provides recreational areas, including beaches and opportunities for water activities. The municipality has a relatively small population and maintains a more rural character compared to some of Puerto Rico's larger urban centers.
