Gutresident is a term used to describe organisms that maintain a long-term, stable presence within the gastrointestinal tract of a host. In practice, the phrase is often synonymous with resident gut microbiota or core gut microbiome, though usage varies, and some writers reserve it for microbes that persist despite fluctuations in diet and health status.

Typical gut residents include bacteria across major phyla such as Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes, as well as smaller populations of Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria. Archaea (notably methanogens like Methanobrevibacter) and certain fungi and viruses may also be part of the resident community. These organisms form complex, host-adapted ecosystems through niche specialization, metabolic cooperation, and immune interactions.

Key characteristics of gut residents include stable colonization, transmission between generations or individuals via the environment or contact, and partial resistance to washout. They contribute to digestion, fermentation of indigestible carbohydrates into short-chain fatty acids, synthesis of vitamins, modulation of the host immune system, and competitive exclusion of pathogens. Their composition can be influenced by age, diet, antibiotics, infections, and geography, and disruption can lead to dysbiosis with health consequences.
