GrünSand

GrünSand is a term used in German-speaking contexts that can denote two distinct concepts. Most commonly, it refers to green sand, a molding material used in metal casting. It can also denote greensand, a greenish sandstone rich in glauconite, encountered in geological settings.

In metallurgy, GrünSand is a mixture of silica sand, a small amount of bentonite clay acting as a binder, and water. The combination remains moist and pliable, allowing it to be rammed into molds around a pattern. When molten metal is poured, the heat hardens the mold and the moisture turns to steam, but the sand maintains permeability to vent gases. The sand can be reclaimed and reconditioned for repeated use by adjusting moisture and binder content. It is valued for relatively low material cost, good permeability, and collapsibility, which helps with mold release and finishing. It also enables the production of complex shapes.
