Gróandas

Gróandas is a municipality located in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. It lies near the Serra do Rio do Rastro, an area known for its scenic mountain roads and rich biodiversity. The town covers approximately 280 square kilometres and had a population of about 3,500 residents according to the 2020 census, reflecting a modest growth compared with the previous decade.

The origin of Gróandas can be traced back to the early 20th century, when it was founded by German and Italian immigrants who were attracted by the region’s temperate climate and fertile soils. These settlers established small-scale agriculture, cultivating crops such as wheat, barley, and corn, which remain part of the local economy today. In recent years, eco-tourism has become an increasingly important sector, with visitors drawn to the area's well-preserved natural landscapes and traditional festivals.

Culturally, Gróandas maintains several community events that reflect its immigrant heritage. The annual Carneiro Fest, held in July, celebrates livestock farming with music, dance and culinary showcases. Local governance follows the Brazilian municipal system, with a mayor serving a four‑year term and a council of elected officials responsible for municipal services and development projects. The municipality is part of the northern region of Santa Catarina’s administrative divisions and works closely with neighboring towns to support regional tourism initiatives and infrastructure improvements.
