Grækere

Grækere, or Greeks in English, are the people of Greece or of Greek descent. They form the majority population of the Hellenic Republic and constitute a broader ethnic and linguistic group that shares the Greek language (Greek: Ελληνική). The Greek language has ancient roots and has two standard varieties: Demotic Greek and Katharevousa historically; currently Demotic is standard with classical influences.

Geography and population: The core population is in Greece, located in Southern Europe on the Balkan Peninsula and the Aegean Islands. There is also a large Greek diaspora in North America, Europe, Australia, and parts of Africa; the global Greek community numbers several million people.

History and culture: Greek identity encompasses a long history from ancient Greece, the classical period, Hellenistic, and the Byzantine era to the modern nation-state established after independence in the early 19th century. Greek culture has contributed to philosophy, drama, literature, mathematics, and political ideas such as early forms of democracy. Religion is predominantly Greek Orthodox, though there are Greek Catholics, Protestants, and Muslims among minority communities, especially in Thrace and Cyprus.

Modern context: In contemporary times, Greece is a parliamentary republic with a diverse economy and strong cultural heritage. The Greek diaspora maintains language and traditions while integrating with host societies.
