Grunvävnad

Grunvävnad is a Swedish term that translates to "basic weave" or "plain weave" in English. It refers to the most fundamental and simplest type of textile weave. In a plain weave, the warp threads (longitudinal threads) and the weft threads (transverse threads) interlace at right angles, with each weft thread passing over one warp thread and then under the next, alternating with each pass. This creates a strong and durable fabric with a balanced structure.

The plain weave is characterized by its simple interlacing pattern, often described as a 1/1 weave. It is the most common and widely used weave structure in textile production due to its ease of manufacturing and the resulting fabric's versatility. Fabrics like cotton sheeting, muslin, percale, and linen are often produced using a plain weave. The appearance of a plain weave fabric is typically a uniform texture, where the individual warp and weft threads are visible and create a checkerboard-like pattern at a microscopic level. It can be produced from a wide variety of fibers, including natural fibers like cotton, linen, and silk, as well as synthetic fibers. The density of the weave can be varied, affecting the fabric's weight, drape, and breathability.
