Großmaßstabskarten, also known as large-scale maps, represent a relatively small geographic area with a high level of detail. The term "large scale" refers to the ratio between the map distance and the corresponding distance on the ground. In a large-scale map, this ratio is smaller, meaning one unit on the map represents a shorter distance in reality. For example, a map with a scale of 1:1,000 is a large-scale map because one centimeter on the map represents only 1,000 centimeters (or 10 meters) in the real world.

These maps are characterized by their detailed depiction of features such as buildings, individual trees, roads, rivers, and property lines. They are typically used for local planning, engineering projects, land surveying, and detailed navigation within a confined area. Common examples include city maps, cadastral maps, and topographic maps of small regions. The large scale allows for the inclusion of precise measurements and the representation of fine features that would be lost on smaller-scale maps.

In contrast to small-scale maps, which show large geographic areas like continents or entire countries with less detail, Großmaßstabskarten focus on the intricacies of a limited territory. The larger the scale number (e.g., 1:500 is larger than 1:5,000), the more detailed the map will be. This high level of detail makes them invaluable for tasks requiring precise spatial information and close examination of the terrain or built environment.
