Griðarlegar refers to a specific type of protective sanctuary in Old Norse law. These were designated safe havens where individuals could seek refuge from feuds, legal pursuit, or violence. The concept of griðarlegar was deeply ingrained in the social and legal fabric of Viking Age Scandinavia, reflecting a societal need for mechanisms to de-escalate conflict and protect individuals, even those who had committed offenses.

Entering a griðarlegar granted a temporary cessation of hostilities. The specific rules and duration of sanctuary varied between regions and over time, but generally, an individual within the griðarlegar was immune from attack or arrest. This protection often extended to a certain radius around the sanctuary itself. The most common griðarlegar were associated with religious sites, such as churches or pagan temples, as these places were considered sacred and inviolable. However, secular locations, like a chieftain's hall or a specific homestead, could also be designated as griðarlegar.

To enter a griðarlegar, a person typically had to make a formal request or be brought there by someone who could vouch for their need for protection. The sanctuary was not an unconditional escape; often, the protected individual was expected to eventually address the reasons for their flight, perhaps through compensation, legal arbitration, or exile. The breaking of griðarlegar was a serious offense, often punishable by severe penalties. The concept of griðarlegar played a crucial role in maintaining social order by providing a structured way to manage conflict and prevent the endless cycle of revenge.
