The formula for calculating gravitational weight is Weight = mass × acceleration due to gravity (W = m × g). The acceleration due to gravity (g) varies depending on the celestial body. For instance, Earth's average gravitational acceleration is approximately 9.81 m/s². This means an object with a mass of 1 kilogram would have a weight of approximately 9.81 Newtons on Earth. In scientific contexts, weight is often expressed in units of force, such as Newtons. However, in everyday language, weight is commonly referred to in units of mass, like kilograms or pounds, which can lead to confusion between the concepts of mass and weight. Understanding the distinction is crucial in physics and astronomy.
