Gratecoolers

Gratecoolers are a type of evaporative cooler that utilizes a porous grate structure to facilitate cooling. Unlike traditional swamp coolers that typically employ a wetted pad, gratecoolers integrate the water-permeable material directly into a grid-like framework. This design allows air to pass through the grate, which is kept moist, leading to a reduction in air temperature through evaporation.

The primary mechanism behind a gratecooler's operation is the principle of evaporative cooling. As warm, dry air comes into contact with the wet grate, water within the grate begins to evaporate. This phase change from liquid to gas requires energy, which is absorbed from the surrounding air, thereby lowering its temperature. The cooled air is then circulated into the desired space.

Gratecoolers can be found in various applications, often as a more compact or aesthetically integrated cooling solution. They are sometimes employed in commercial settings, industrial processes, or even for personal cooling devices. The efficiency of a gratecooler is dependent on ambient humidity levels; they perform best in dry climates where the evaporation rate is higher.
