Grafitointimenetelmä, often translated as the graphitization method, is a thermal process used to convert amorphous carbon materials into graphite. This transformation involves heating the material to very high temperatures, typically above 2000 degrees Celsius, in an inert atmosphere. The intense heat causes the carbon atoms to rearrange their structure from a disordered, amorphous state to the ordered, layered crystalline structure characteristic of graphite.

The primary goal of graphitization is to enhance the electrical and thermal conductivity of carbon-based materials. Amorphous carbon has limited conductivity, whereas graphite's layered structure allows for efficient electron and phonon transport. This improvement in conductivity makes graphitized materials suitable for a wide range of applications, including electrodes, battery components, lubricants, and high-temperature refractories.

The process parameters, such as temperature, heating rate, and duration, are critical in determining the degree of graphitization and the resulting material properties. Impurities present in the precursor material can also influence the graphitization process and the final graphite quality. Various methods exist for achieving graphitization, including Acheson furnaces and electric resistance furnaces, each suited for different scales and types of carbon materials. The successful application of the graphitization method is fundamental in producing advanced carbon materials with desired performance characteristics.
