If there's a difference in elevation, gravity will exert a downward force on the fluid. This gravitational force, acting over a distance, creates a pressure difference that drives the fluid to flow from higher elevations to lower ones.

This concept is crucial for understanding how water moves through soil layers, how groundwater aquifers recharge and discharge, and how oil or gas migrates within underground reservoirs.
