Grabarten

Grabarten is a term used in cemetery contexts to describe the different forms of graves available for burial or cremation. In German-speaking regions, the choice of grabart is generally governed by cemetery rules (Friedhofssatzung) and regional law, and it can influence capacity, design, and duration of use. The following categories cover the common forms encountered in many cemeteries.

Erdgrab refers to a traditional ground burial in a coffin, usable for a single person or shared with a partner or relatives. Wahlgrab denotes a grave plot selected by the bereaved, typically allowing greater flexibility in design and duration of use; Reihengrab describes a grave that is assigned in a row without a prior choice. Urnengrab covers the burial of ashes, either in the ground or in a columbarium or wall niche (Kolumbarium). Rasengrab is a lawn-style grave with a flat, grass-covered surface and can accommodate single or multiple burials. Baumbestattung places the remains at the base of a tree, while Wald- oder Naturbestattungen occur in designated forest or natural areas to emphasize ecological burial.

Gemeinschaftsgrab is a shared grave for several deceased, with common maintenance, and Familiengrab refers to a family grave that serves multiple generations. Seebestattung is the burial of ashes at sea and is permitted in jurisdictions with suitable regulations. Kolumbarium structures provide urn niches for compact storage of ashes.

Care and costs: Grabpflege and rights to use a grave are typically managed through the cemetery contract, with renewal or renewal rights required after a set period. Availability and exact conditions vary by country and locality, reflecting cultural preferences, religious practices, and environmental considerations. Cremation and alternative forms have increasingly influenced the range of grabarten offered.
