Gqproteiineja, more commonly known as G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), constitute a large family of cell surface receptors that play a critical role in signal transduction. These receptors are involved in a vast array of physiological processes, mediating the cellular response to a multitude of external stimuli including hormones, neurotransmitters, and odors. The structure of a GPCR is characterized by seven transmembrane alpha-helices.

When an extracellular ligand binds to a GPCR, it induces a conformational change in the receptor. This change, in turn, activates an associated intracellular trimeric G protein. The G protein then dissociates into its subunits, typically an alpha subunit and a beta-gamma subunit dimer, which then go on to modulate the activity of various downstream effector proteins. These effectors can include enzymes that produce second messengers or ion channels, ultimately altering cellular function.

The diversity of GPCRs and their associated G proteins allows for a wide range of signaling pathways, making them crucial targets for drug development. A significant percentage of currently marketed drugs target GPCRs, highlighting their importance in treating conditions ranging from cardiovascular diseases to neurological disorders and allergies. Understanding the intricate mechanisms of GPCR signaling is fundamental to both basic biological research and the development of novel therapeutic interventions.
