Govindghat

Govindghat is a small town and a significant pilgrim center located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India. It sits at an elevation of around 1,828 meters (6,000 feet) above sea level, nestled in the Alaknanda River valley. The town is situated on the Rishikesh-Badrinath National Highway, making it a crucial transit point for pilgrims visiting the Badrinath and Hemkund Sahib shrines.

The primary importance of Govindghat lies in its role as a base camp for treks. It serves as the starting point for the arduous trek to Hemkund Sahib, a revered Sikh pilgrimage site, and the Valley of Flowers National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its alpine meadows. The trek to Hemkund Sahib is approximately 13 kilometers long and involves a steep ascent.

Govindghat itself features several gurdwaras, including the Gurdwara Hemkund Sahib, which provides accommodation and langar (community kitchen) services to pilgrims. The Alaknanda River flows through the town, and the surrounding Himalayan landscape offers breathtaking views. The nearest major airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, and the closest railway station is in Haridwar.
