In females, FSH stimulates the growth and development of ovarian follicles, which contain eggs. As follicles mature, they produce estrogen. LH triggers ovulation, the release of a mature egg from the ovary, and the formation of the corpus luteum, which produces progesterone. In males, FSH stimulates spermatogenesis, the production of sperm in the testes. LH stimulates the Leydig cells in the testes to produce testosterone, the primary male sex hormone. Testosterone is vital for the development of male secondary sexual characteristics and the ongoing production of sperm.

The release of gonadotropins is regulated by gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), which is produced by the hypothalamus in the brain. GnRH acts on the anterior pituitary, stimulating it to release LH and FSH. This entire process is part of a complex feedback loop involving hormones from the gonads (ovaries and testes) and the brain, ensuring precise control over reproductive functions.
