Gmerlin

Gmerlin is an open-source multimedia framework and set of applications designed for audio and video playback, recording, editing, transcoding, and streaming. It is built around a modular core that separates data handling from user interfaces, enabling developers to extend or replace components as needed.

The core library, libgmerlin, works with the Gavl (Gmerlin Audio Video Library) subsystem, which provides portable, pluggable decoding, encoding, and processing of multimedia data. Gavl acts as the bridge between formats and the higher-level applications, allowing gmerlin-based tools to support a wide range of audio and video codecs and containers through plug-ins and external codecs.

Gmerlin includes a collection of applications and tools, such as a media player and associated editing/encoding utilities, all designed to work with the same backend libraries. The user interface is typically GTK+-based on common desktop Linux distributions, with efforts to support other platforms.

Licensing and development: Gmerlin is released under the GNU General Public License (GPL). It has been developed by a community of volunteers since the early 2000s and continues to receive updates and refinements through community and contributor-driven releases.
