Glycomicsonderzoek, or glycomics research, is the scientific study of glycans, diverse carbohydrate structures that decorate proteins, lipids, and other molecules. The field seeks to catalog glycan structures, understand their biosynthesis, and determine their roles in biology. Glycans can be N-linked or O-linked on proteins, form glycosaminoglycans, or exist as glycolipids and free oligosaccharides. Their branching, linkage types, and stereochemistry strongly influence recognition, signaling, and cellular interactions.

Core methods combine release, derivatization, and identification of glycans with high-resolution separation and analysis. Mass spectrometry, especially LC-MS/MS, is central, following specific release strategies such as PNGase F for N-glycans or β-elimination for O-glycans. Complementary techniques include HILIC and PGC chromatography, capillary electrophoresis, and NMR. Lectin arrays and glycan microarrays probe interactions, while public databases (e.g., GlyTouCan, GlyConnect, UniLectin) support data interpretation and standardization.

Glycomicsonderzoek informs biomedicine and biotechnology, including biomarker discovery for cancer and inflammatory diseases, study of congenital disorders of glycosylation, vaccine development, and quality control of therapeutic glycoproteins. It also clarifies host–pathogen interactions and glycan-mediated signaling.

Challenges include structural isomerism, sample preparation biases, and data integration across platforms. Standardization and reproducibility remain critical. Ongoing efforts aim to integrate glycomics with glycoproteomics and other omics, improve automation, and expand reference databases to accelerate clinical translation.
