Glycocyamine

Glycocyamine is a non-proteinogenic amino acid that is an intermediate in the synthesis of creatine. It is produced in the liver and kidneys from arginine and glycine. Glycocyamine can then be transported to the muscles, where it is converted to creatine. Creatine is an important molecule for energy storage and production in muscle cells.

The conversion of glycocyamine to creatine is catalyzed by the enzyme creatine kinase. This reaction also requires ATP. The creatine produced is then phosphorylated to phosphocreatine, which serves as a readily available source of phosphate groups to regenerate ATP during periods of high energy demand, such as during intense physical activity.

Glycocyamine itself has some physiological effects. It has been studied for its potential as a dietary supplement, with some research suggesting it may improve athletic performance and cognitive function. However, the scientific evidence supporting these claims is still developing, and more rigorous studies are needed. The body also excretes glycocyamine in the urine, and its levels can be used as a marker for creatine metabolism.
