Gljúfrabúi

Gljúfrabúi is a waterfall located in southern Iceland, near the larger and more famous waterfall Seljalandsfoss. Its name, which translates to "canyon dweller," hints at its unique setting. Unlike many Icelandic waterfalls, Gljúfrabúi is partially hidden behind a cliff face. To reach it, visitors must wade through a shallow stream and step carefully over moss-covered rocks into a narrow gorge.

Inside the gorge, the waterfall cascades down into a small, enclosed chamber. The experience of standing within this cavern, with water falling around you and the light filtering in from the opening, is often described as magical. The spray from the waterfall creates a constant mist, contributing to the lush green moss that covers the surrounding rocks and walls.

Gljúfrabúi is part of the same river system as Seljalandsfoss and can be easily visited in conjunction with it, as they are situated very close to each other along the Ring Road. While it attracts fewer visitors than its neighbor, its secluded and intimate setting makes it a memorable stop for those seeking a slightly more adventurous encounter with Icelandic nature. Due to its location within a gorge, waterproof clothing is highly recommended for visitors.
