Glasarten

Glasarten is the term used to describe the various types of glass, classified by composition, manufacturing method, and resulting properties. The most common divisions include soda-lime glass, borosilicate glass, lead glass, aluminosilicate glass, and fused silica.

Soda-lime glass is the baseline glass used in most bottles and windows. It typically consists of silica with soda and lime as fluxes, offering good clarity and low cost but limited resistance to thermal stress compared with specialty glasses.

Borosilicate glass contains boron oxide, which reduces thermal expansion and increases resistance to thermal shock. It is favored for laboratory glassware, cookware, and certain lighting and electronics components.

Lead glass, or crystal, includes lead oxide to increase refractive index and density, producing brilliance and weight; it is used for decorative items and some optical applications. Aluminosilicate glass contains aluminum oxide, offering high strength and thermal resistance; it is common in display glass and some cookware. Fused silica is nearly pure silicon dioxide, with excellent purity and thermal stability; it serves high-precision optics and semiconductor environments.

Other important forms include tempered glass, which is heat-treated to improve strength, and laminated glass, which uses interlayers for safety and sound insulation. Glass types are produced by float, drawn, pressed, or blown processes, and many can be recycled. The term Glasarten emphasizes ongoing development in glass science and engineering.
